The 4078 is a versatile high performance dual channel function/arbitrary waveform generator with the largest arbitrary memory depth in its class. The generator combines the ability to produce nearly and conceivable arbitrary waveform with accuracy and precision and a DDS architecture offering easy to use conventional function generator capabilities. Arbitrary waveforms have 14 bit amplitude resolution, 100 MSa/s sample rate and up to 400,000 points length. Waveforms can be output in continuous, triggered, gated or burst modes. The instrument can be remotely controlled using SCPI compliant commands via RS-232.
Extensive features such as internal or external AM, FM and FSK modulation along with versatile sweep capabilities and variable edge pulse generation make this generator suitable for wide range of applications including electronic design, sensor simulation, functional test or generation of I/Q modulated signals.
Features and Benefits:
- 14-bit, 100 MSa/s, 400k, point arbitrary waveform generator
- 25 MHz Sine / 25 MHz Square Waveforms
- Predefined Pulse, Ramp, Triangle, Noise, Sin (x)/x, Exponential and Gaussian waveforms
- Both channels offer full functionality. All waveform parameters such as frequency, amplitude and offset can be set independently.
- Synchronize both output signals to the same clock signal (external or internal) and precisely adjust thephase relationship between the two signals
- Economical baseband I/Q signal source
- Saves cost and bench space
- AM, FM and FSK modulation
- 10mVpp to 10Vpp with 1 mVpp setable amplitude, resolution
- Large graphical LCD shows a detailed output waveform representation
- Fully programmable markers
- Fully protected output
- Closed case calibration
- Arbitrary waveform editing software included
- SCPi compliant command set

"Good bang for the buck. More expensive function generators can be easier to use but will have pretty much the same basic feature set. I like the compact size. The menus are pretty easy to navigate through. The internal non-volatile memory can be programmed with quite a few frequently used waveforms to complement the standard waveforms. I like being able to have the instrument power up with a specified setup, especially since it can take a while to select a specific waveform from the non-volatile memory. Updating some of the settings requires significant update delays. This can be a little frustrating when making large changes or lots of small changes. The PC software provided to setup arbitrary waveforms could use a lot more features. No support for handling multiple waveforms, and there are only a few waveforms that aren't part of the standard set of the generator. I used the feature to import waveforms from text files to get around some of the limitations. "
Application: This is used to develop data acquisition systems and detector amplifiers. The signals from this piece of equipment simulate the signals from the actual instrument to help evaluate designs.
