Chlorine dioxide is used primarily as a disinfectant in potable water and also in various industrial processes. In potable water applications, it is gaining popularity over chlorine, considering that it does not generate trihalomethanes when reacting with organic compounds. In industrial applications, it is used as a bleaching agent in such applications as pulp and paper.
